Palmengarten Frankfurt. Website Relaunch

Reference project Digital Media. Plants presented in detail and optimized for the iPad®

Mission

With its 22 acres of space, Frankfurt's Palmengarten is one of Germany's largest botanical gardens. It is a green refuge for the city's citizens and an attraction for tourists. The purpose of the website was to show how important Palmengarten is and how beautiful its plants are. All as a tangible experience and based on state-of-the-art technology that is both intuitive to use and multilingual.

Implementation

Experience the change of seasons.
Depending on which season we are in, the Palmengarten website changes just like nature outside. The colour palette and selection of plants is adapted to each new season, as can be seen in the large-format photographs. Autumn is soaked in bright red-brown tones with the sun low in the sky, while winter comes with an icy-cool look.

The stem carries the flower – and all the information.
The presentation of content on the website remains consistent with the metaphor. Depicted as leaves, text and images run along a plant stem. Users can unfold individual "leaves" and go deeper into the content. All information is easily accessible in a few clicks. Virtual tours, an overview of seasonal highlights, links to articles and photos are also available.

Mobile trends in its sights.
The website was built using the latest technology and optimized for use on the iPad®. The app also takes advantage of motion sensor options. In addition to technical design and execution, Neue Digitale/Razorfish also handled the photo shoots of the plants. These were photographed in elaborate studio shots against their normal habitat, and prepared for the content.

Conclusion

Neue Digitale/Razorfish drove the project using the highest standards of design and technology – from the structuring of the content to the photo shoot. In the first week after its launch, the new site had already registered up to 10,000 visitors. The navigation proved to be intuitive and lets visitors experience and immerse themselves in the atmosphere and beauty of the plant world. As part of the cooperation, other projects soon followed; for example, a plant encyclopaedia for botanists, maintained by experts at the Palmengarten. By the way, Neue Digitale/Razorfish sees the site as part of its commitment to the city of Frankfurt – and therefore did not invoice the majority of cost.
